UEFA Qualifiers Spark Doubt for PSV and Rangers
A 2-2 draw in the qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) has left both the Rangers and PSV Eindhoven wondering about their fate.
The two teams went head-to-head at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland last night, Tuesday 22 August, to fight for their spot in the UCL group stages.
The match was a fierce battle from the start, and Rangers’ striker Abdallah Sima was only able to break the stalemate in the 45th minute with the first goal of the match.
PSV midfielder Ibrahim Sangaré was able to claim a point on the scoreboard at the 61st-minute mark, with some quick footwork and help from his teammate, Johan Bakayoko.
The Rangers weren’t about to allow their home-turf advantage to go to waste: In the 76th minute, striker Rabbi Matondo scored his first goal since joining the club, assisted by forward Cyriel Dessers.
Just four minutes later, PSV captain Luuk de Jong ensured his team still had a fighting chance at the UCL play-offs by once again levelling the scoreboard to 2-2.
Interestingly, the two teams reached the same score at the same stage of last year’s UCL competition. The Scottish side was able to break through their uncertain future when they ventured to the Netherlands for a rematch a few days later.
Perhaps we’ll see another repeat of history when the two clubs face off again in the Netherlands next Wednesday, 30 August.
